Commentary on Angelina Martinez's Accident in San Antonio

If reports have their facts straight and someone was driving the wrong direction, then investigators' main priority should likely be finding out why. Two lives were lost and another was threatened in this wreck, and if that's not enough reason to get to the truth of how that occurred I don't know what is.

Some may be ready to blame the wrong-way driver outright without all that extra investigation, citing common reasons for someone to head the wrong way on a controlled-access freeway. Intoxication is a word that comes up often after collisions like this one; while that's an important thing to look into and may have its own further implications if proven.

That's why I always advocate for careful and thorough investigations after a wreck — if not from police with their limited time and competing priorities, then from independent experts with the training and tools to find the whole story. At the very least two or more families deserve every answer they can get about their tragic losses that night; anything beyond that might depend on what those answers turn out to be.
