Commentary on Three-Vehicle Accident on US-321 in Orangeburg County
There isn't a lot of clear information yet about how exactly this crash happened or what caused it, but considering how much damage the pileup caused a careful investigation is obviously in order.
To find the clear facts that tell the whole story police should look into many possible factors, such as:
- Operator errors like distraction, speeding, or failure to yield;
- Problems or defects in the vehicles involved;
- Road conditions and design;
- Visibility, lighting and sightlines;
- Inclement weather; and
- Any other traffic in the area, just to name a few.
Checking whether those issues or others played parts is important, and until investigators can connect more dots it's best not to prematurely decide what picture they'll make.
Unfortunately police might not complete that picture, depending on whether they have the available time and resources to get to the bottom of things. That's why after major accidents--particularly ones involving commercial trucks--I often suggest a second look by independent experts to better ensure the whole truth is found. Whatever is learned, those affected deserve to know that no stone was left unturned to find answers. Anything else would depend on what those answers are.
