Pedestrian Killed by 18-Wheeler on West 44th Street in Manhattan, NY

Manhattan, NY — October 6, 2022, a man was fatally struck by a construction 18-wheeler on West 44th Street in Midtown Manhattan.

Authorities say the incident happened around 11:30 a.m. on West 44th near Eight Avenue. Preliminary investigation suggests the victim was walking in the area when he was hit under unknown circumstances by a tractor-trailer.

The pedestrian, believed to be in his 40s, went under the truck and suffered fatal injuries. The truck driver remained at the scene and spoke with investigators.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information is currently available.

Commentary on Manhattan Truck Accident on West 44th

It's not clear exactly how this collision occurred, but obviously its result is tragic. The loss of a man's life is more than enough reason to investigate what happened carefully and thoroughly, and depending on what that investigation reveals there may be questions of accountability to address.

To be clear, I'm not pointing any fingers at the truck driver here. I read the same reports as everyone else and they don't say anything about fault. I do however see that the news included a witness's statement about the truck driver "going crazy" after seeing the pedestrian under the truck, as well as reports that the truck in question has over a hundred traffic violations on record--including several for speeding in a school zone.

None of that means this accident was automatically the truck driver's fault, but it's troubling information and makes me wonder if someone should take a closer look at the company behind him. If that firm allows its drivers to rack up so many violations and continue to operate its trucks, its lax policies may mean it too should be held responsible for the damage done on West 44th Street. The victim's loved ones deserve to know that everyone who played a part in their loss will be held responsible.
