Commentary on Truck Accident on I-10 near Tonopah
Clearly it's serious when a tire failure causes a major wreck like this, and yet I've found over the years that blowout crashes don't get as much attention as they deserve. People tend to assume something in the road just punctured the tire, and what's anyone to do about random road debris?
It's true that debris commonly causes blowouts, but it's not the only reasons a tire might fail. For instance, what if the truck just wasn't properly maintained and the tire gave way after too much wear and tear? Alternately, what if the tire was defective and it just blew out unexpectedly during normal use? Neither of those has anything to do with road debris, and both of them might mean someone should answer for their part in the damage done.
So how do we determine what was really to blame? Well, that often requires attention from experts with the particular tools and training to look at all the possibilities. Differentiating between poor maintenance, unavoidable debris, defects, and other possible causes requires a lot more effort than just a glance from police. Hopefully steps are taken to make sure those affected by this crash know all the facts. They deserve no less.
