Truck Driver Injured in Overturn Crash on CR 6 near Grand Forks, ND

Grand Forks, ND — October 5, 2022, a truck driver was injured when his big rig hauling sugar beets overturned on County Road 6 near Grand Forks.

Authorities say the incident happened Wednesday morning along CR 6, roughly three miles southwest of town. Preliminary investigation suggests the loaded truck was traveling from a field to a deposit station at Reynolds when it started to exit the roadway for unknown reasons. The driver over-corrected its course and it overturned onto its driver's side.

The truck driver was transported to a Grand Forks hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information is currently available.

Commentary on Truck Overturn Accident near Grand Forks

Police apparently cited the injured truck driver for "care required," which I take to mean they think his actions were responsible for the crash. I have no specific reason to dispute that; operator errors are behind a great many similar wrecks. However, I also know from long experience that police and the public can be a little too eager to pin the blame on careless driving when there's actually more to the story.

To be sure the whole truth is found investigators still need to look at other potential factors beyond the driver's control. If the truck lost traction on water or gravel, or if it had some kind of serious mechanical problem that sent it off the road, it surely wouldn't be fair to point fingers at the victim.

I'm not trying to overcomplicate things or saying I know something police don't. I'm only pointing out that the right thing to do so soon after a crash is to keep an open mind and conduct a full investigation. Until all the facts are in, that driver is entitled to the benefit of the doubt the same as anyone else.
