Commentary on Semi-Trailer Accident on I-75 in Boone County

Something I saw in public statements was authorities saying the victims' vehicle stopped "just over the crest of a hill." When I look at the latest images of this stretch of road, however, I don't really see any hills that would pose any serious impairment to visibility--especially for a truck driver sitting much higher than the average motorist. So what was different about this crash?

There needs to be a serious look into why the truck driver was unable to see the car in time. For all we know, the victim's vehicle broke down suddenly and lost power, leaving it disabled and without lights. A truck driver likely wouldn't be able to avoid something like that. But if the victims simply slowed for traffic, had mechanical issues, stopped to avoid hitting something, or otherwise were well lit and visible, it's likely that investigations that a more responsible truck driver would have been able to avoid this collision.
