Commentary on Johnson County Truck Accident on I-435
Folks tend to see the few facts news reports can offer about a crash like this and conclude the truck driver must have done something wrong to lose control of his vehicle. I'm sure police will consider various operator errors like speeding or texting when trying to find out what went wrong, but it wouldn't be right to exclude other possibilities--things out of the driver's control.
For instance, proper consideration isn't always given to mechanical failures or defects in a vehicle causing it to go off-course. They're not as common as some other explanations, but they still happen all the time and can have devastating results (consider the GM ignition switch fiasco a few years back, for example). Commercial trucks are just as susceptible to faulty parts sending them out of control, yet police investigators don't always have the training or tools to look into that possibility.
