One Killed in Box Truck, Semi-Truck Accident on I-70 in Keystone, CO

Keystone, CO — October 1, 2022, a 47-year-old man died when a box truck and a semi-truck collided on Interstate 70 in Keystone.

Authorities say the incident happened Saturday along I-70 eastbound near mile marker 211 and the Eisenhower Tunnel. Investigators released few details about the crash except to say that a box truck is thought to have crashed into a semi-truck, causing fatal injuries to the box truck's passenger. Both truck drivers refused treatment at the scene.

The investigation continues but authorities believe the box truck driver is at fault.

No further information is available at this time.

Commentary on Truck Accident on I-70 in Keystone

Obviously there's still a lot of work to do before anyone can really claim to understand what happened here. All the news says so far is that a box truck allegedly crashed into a semi-truck, but that still leaves a lot of blanks to fill in. For example: Precisely why did the crash happen? Did the box truck driver just make a mistake, like getting distracted or following too closely? Was something wrong with the truck that kept it from avoiding the big rig? What were road and weather conditions like? What about visibility? Other traffic in the area? Why was the passenger in the box truck at the time?

Obviously many questions still need clear answers. Not only does the victim's family deserve to know the whole story, but depending on whether that person was a fellow employee or not there may be some differences in how their loved ones could seek help in the aftermath of this tragic incident.

Altogether it's just important to be sure all the relevant details are rounded up during the investigation, and yet I have my misgivings that police will invest the time or care needed to get them. People unhappy with incomplete or (in their opinion) wrong police reports often call the firm, and I typically recommend they have independent experts take another look to see if any other blanks can be filled in. At the very least the people who suffered an enormous and heart-breaking loss deserve all the answers they can get. Any steps beyond that would depend on what those answers turn out to be.
