Harrison, WI — September 27, 2022, 52-year-old Patricia Nau died in a collision with a dump truck on State Highway 114 in Calumet County.
Authorities say the incident happened around 7:30 a.m. along Highway 114 at State Park Road. Preliminary investigation suggests Nau was driving an SUV east on the highway when she attempted to turn onto State Park. While turning the SUV entered the path of a westbound dump truck and the two collided in the roadway. After the impact one or both vehicles caught fire.
Nau was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver reportedly received minor injuries.
Investigators believe glare from the rising sun may have been a factor in the wreck.

Commentary on Patricia Nau Accident in Harrison
Police seem to think sun glare was a key factor here. Maybe things really do boil down to a turn made in a bad moment due to the difficulty of seeing approaching traffic, but I hope investigators will consider other possible factors as well to determine whether the wreck could reasonably have been avoided.
For instance, I hope they'll find out how fast the dump truck was traveling on the other side of the highway and how far apart the vehicles were when the victim started to turn. I'm not accusing the truck driver of anything, but it seems like sun glare wouldn't be a problem for a westbound vehicle at that time of morning. If the driver could see the turning SUV and could have steered clear or stopped, then there may be some questions about why that didn't happen. Of course the same investigation could also find out there was no time or room to react before the crash; it's just important to know for sure.
Ultimately I believe the important thing is to find as many answers as possible for the victim's loved ones. They deserve no less than the whole and true story; will police take the time and care needed to get it for them?
