Walking Trucker Hit, Killed by Big Rig on Turner Turnpike near Bristow, OK

Bristow, OK — September 29, 2022, a truck driver on foot on the Turner Turnpike was struck and killed by another big rig near Bristow.

Authorities say the incident happened Thursday afternoon along the Turner Turnpike (Interstate 44) near mile marker 199, east of Bristow. Preliminary investigation suggests a truck driver pulled his 18-wheeler onto the roadside for unknown reasons and exited, then began to walk on foot down the roadway. As he was walking he was hit by a second passing semi-truck. Reports say the striking truck driver left the scene but was stopped near the Mayes County line.

The pedestrian suffered fatal injuries in the accident.

The investigation continues. No further information is available at this time.

While they don't have many preliminary details to offer, even early news reports paint a troubling picture. There are a still a lot of dots to connect here that could significantly change how the incident is understood, but a man lost his life and it's important know exactly how and why that happened.

I hope investigators will take the time and care to look into all the lingering questions. For instance: Why did the victim pull his truck onto the shoulder and walk away as reports describe? Was the truck disabled? Did the driver just want to stretch his legs for a minute or two? Where exactly was he in relation to the road--was he crossing it, walking along it, or keeping to the shoulder for safety?

And what about the truck--precisely how and why did it hit the victim? Was that driver awake, alert, and paying careful attention to his surroundings? If the pedestrian was on the shoulder, how did the other truck end up there when it hit him? After the impact, why did the driver leave the scene? Did they realize they hit the victim? If so, why did they run? If not, why not?

The point of all these questions and the many others like them isn't to overcomplicate things or make accusations. I just firmly believe, as I think most people do, that it's only right to investigate these matters carefully and thoroughly. The victim's loved ones deserve no less than the whole story, and the facts uncovered could be instrumental in holding the right parties accountable for the damage done.
