Students Injured in School Bus, Truck Accident in Chase County, NE

Chase County, NE -- September 27, 2022, multiple students were injured due to an accident where a school bus and a semi-truck collided.

Investigators reported that the crash took place at around 4:00 p.m. in a rural area between Imperial and Champion.

It appears that a Chase County Schools bus was dropping off students at the time. The bus reportedly made a left turn, causing it to collide with a semi-truck traveling in the opposite direction. The bus then overturned.

Several students were taken to area hospitals, three said to have serious injuries. It's unclear if the drivers were hurt. No further information about the crash is available at this time.

Commentary on School Bus, Truck Accident in Chase County

Considering this happened in daylight hours, I can't help wondering how in the world a bus driver could just turn into the path of a large commercial truck. What could have gone wrong?

Did the driver not see the truck? Was the truck supposed to yield? Was there an issue with visibility in the area? Is this a stretch of road notorious for seeing serious wrecks due to a lack of signage or traffic control? Do either drivers involved have a history of accidents like this?

One way or another, it's highly unlikely this happens without someone making a big mistake. Considering trucking companies and government agencies are just about equal in terms of trying desperately to avoid responsibility, it will likely take nothing short of thorough independent accident reconstructions to ensure the families affected by these events can tell their side of the story. Are those steps being taken here?
