After the impact one of the trucks reportedly caught fire.

The driver of the striking truck was fatally injured in the crash. The driver that was hit sustained minor injuries.

Commentary on Truck Accident on I-10 in Stockton

Looking at the basics of this crash that news reports offer, it may seem like a straightforward matter of one truck rear-ending the other. However, long experience has taught me that few crashes--particularly those involving commercial vehicles--are that straightforward. If there's more to the story it's important to find that out.

For instance, reports also say the truck that was hit just left a nearby business. Did that truck's driver check for thru-traffic before making his turn? How fast was that truck moving when the other big rig caught up and hit it? Were both truck drivers awake, alert, and paying full attention to their surroundings? If no, why not?

I'm not trying to point fingers or question police findings. I'm only saying it's best not to jump to conclusions until all the facts are in. Despite how they may seem at first sometimes these crashes aren't nearly as avoidable as preliminary findings make them sound. Both parties deserve the benefit of the doubt, and everyone affected by the wreck's sad results deserve to know that no stone was left unturned in pursuit of the whole story. Will law enforcement make that effort here, or should independent experts have another look?
