One Killed in Fiery Truck Accident on I-35 in Noble County, OK

Noble County, OK -- September 27, 2022, at least one was killed and others were hurt after an accident involving multiple semis on I-35.

Officials said that the events occurred outside Tonkawa along I-35. Vision apparently was impaired due to a grass fire along the interstate.

One truck driver told Oklahoma Highway Patrol officials that they turned on their hazards and began to "pull to the right shoulder." While doing so, a chain-reaction somehow occurred of multiple vehicles, including several commercial trucks, crashed into the back of that truck. Several of the vehicles then caught fire and became engulfed.

OHP confirms one fatality and see others were taken from the scene in critical conditions. At this time, no further information can be confirmed.

Commentary on Fatal Truck Accident on I-35 in Noble County

Frankly there's nothing simple about a situation like this. The chaos of a multi-truck collision is challenging enough without the wreckage going up in flames. It's likely going to take far more thorough investigations to find out what all happened.

One detail that does stand out right now, though, is one driver saying the events began as they slowed and began merging to the right due to the smoke on the roadway. Obtaining other witness statements and any video footage is going to be vital in clearing this up.

Generally speaking, it's possible for thick smoke to become such a problem that drivers can't reasonably avoid a crash like this. However, it's also possible that the truck pulling off the road did so dangerously and unnecessarily. It's also a possibility that the vehicles behind that truck were the ones going too fast or not paying attention. Just putting all the blame on the nearby grass fire may sound reasonable, but it's important to let the evidence speak for itself.

All of this devastation is not to be taken lightly. There are families in need of answers, and there are people in need of whatever help they can get. Waiting around for the authorities isn't likely to get them those things, which is why I wouldn't approach a situation like this without the aid of experienced independent investigators. Professionals with the right tools and experience to sift through such a tumultuous series of events is crucial to ensure nothing important slips through the cracks.
