Three Injured in Dump Truck Accident on Route 31 in Raritan Township, PA

Raritan Township, PA -- September 27, 2022, three people were injured after an accident where a dump truck crashed on Route 31.

Hunterdon County responders were called to mile marker 25 of Route 31 at around 9:20 a.m. It appears that a vehicle was turning off of northbound Route 31 at the time.

Reports suggest that "due to the grade" of the roadway approaching the intersection, "multiple vehicles" did not slow down in time and crashed with one another. A dump truck hauling sand then hit those vehicles before overturning.

Three people were taken to area hospitals, but injuries did not appear to be serious. Investigations are ongoing at this time.

Commentary on Dump Truck Accident on Route 31 in Raritan Township

With a crash like this, there's a complex chain of events which needs to be broken down. It's not likely that all the blame lies on one single person, though that is something to consider. Essentially, the law isn't entirely concerned with blaming a single person. The evidence needs to show which exact events caused which injuries and whether or not those events were avoidable.

It could be everyone here would have been fine had the dump truck slowed down in time, but the truck driver was on their phone, for example. It could also be that the first vehicle wasn't using its turn signal, and they're responsible for all the ensuing collisions. Maybe some injuries were due to the first vehicles colliding, and other injuries were due to the final collision with the dump truck.

Sorting all of this out takes a lot of experience and specialized tools. That's not the sort of thing authorities always have access to, which is why I tend to rely on more thorough independent investigations. If nothing else, getting folks the answers they deserve should be a priority.
