Trooper Jordin Bilthuis Injured in Truck Accident in Union Township, IN

Union Township, IN -- September 26, 2022, Trooper Jordin Bilthuis was injured after an accident where a semi-truck hit her patrol car.

Investigators reported that the crash took place at around 5:00 a.m. along I-65 between DeMotte and Rensselaer.

It appears that Trooper Jordin Bilthuis was in a patrol car with emergency lights on blocking the right lane of the interstate. While there, a semi-truck somehow sideswiped the patrol vehicle.

Trooper Bilthuis was taken to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. The truck driver was cited, reports say. Officials also say there were unspecified violations found upon inspecting the truck. No further information is available at this time.

Commentary on Trooper Jordin Bilthuis Truck Accident in Union Township

It's at least encouraging that injuries weren't described to be more serious, but that doesn't change the fact someone likely needs to be held accountable for this. One thing which stood out to me is investigators apparently digging up violations the truck had. That's not simply a consequences to pile on to the driver. More seriously, that could be a sign that there are deeper problems than whatever caused the crash itself.

When a driver makes a mistake, and they or their vehicle do not meet standards, it's often a red flag that their employer is behaving recklessly. Whether it's failing to train drivers, hiring drivers with reckless driving history, failing to keep up on maintenance, forcing drivers to engage in negligent behavior, or any other irresponsible action, a company that engages in these actions is a danger to the community. Failing to address those issues not only does a disservice to the victims they harmed but also to the public that would likely be harmed in the future.

That's why it's so crucial to take these situations seriously regardless of the condition of the victim. Getting them help is always a priority, but ensuring no one else is harmed in similar incidents must also be a priority.
