Commentary on Semi-Truck Accident on Highway 30 in Tama County

Generally speaking, a truck rear-ending a disabled vehicle during daylight hours is going to raise some red flags. But folks would be wise to avoid jumping to conclusions until they know all the facts. These crashes aren't always reasonably avoidable, so it's important there is clear evidence to show exactly what happened.

For example, I handled a situation not long ago where an 18-wheeler hit a car on the highway, killing that driver. The truck driver said it was simply too dark to see the car, which was disabled at the time. Through court orders, however, we were able to pull video footage from the truck which showed two crucial details. One was that the victim's hazards were on and clearly visible well ahead of the truck driver. The second and shocking detail was the truck driver was watching TV shows on his tablet.

I'm not saying anything like that happened here, but that evidence dug up through independent investigations proved vital in getting that family the resolution they deserved. Getting answers about what went wrong here may require similar steps.
