UPDATE (November 1, 2022): Sources have identified the two victims of this accident as Daniel Lozano and Mariah Garcia. The driver who struck them and then attempted to flee was identified as 30-year-old Julio Alvarado Grande.

Dallas, TX — September 25, 2022, two pedestrians were struck and injured by a driver who attempted to flee on Composite Drive in Dallas.

Authorities say the incident happened shortly before 3:00 a.m. on the 10000 block of Composite. Preliminary investigation suggests a 21-year-old woman and 32-year-old man were crossing the street when a northbound Dodge Neon passed through and hit them both in the roadway.

The driver continued onward a short distance, allegedly trying to leave the scene, but crossed into the southbound lanes and hitting another vehicle. After the collision the driver tried to flee on foot but was caught and kept at the scene until authorities took him into custody.

Both pedestrians were seriously injured and were taken to a local hospital. The people in the southbound car reported minor injuries.

The runaway driver faces two potential charges of intoxication assault and four of failure to stop and render aid.

Commentary on Attempted Hit-and-Run on Composite Drive

It's sad when people are hurt in an accident like this, but add "infuriating" to that when the person who hurt them tries to leave the scene. I'm glad to learn the driver didn't make it very far before his escape attempt fell apart; hopefully with him in custody investigators can learn what on earth possessed him to try and take off after hurting two innocent people.

Frankly a lot of hit-and-run accidents boil down to simple momentary panic--it's an intense moment and some people just fail to overcome their flight response. Other times, however, investigators learn that the suspect had other things to hide and knew what it could mean if they were caught.

For instance, in this case the intoxication assault charges brought against the driver suggest police think he was on drugs or alcohol at the time. If that's the case and alcohol was the intoxicant, it's important to find out where the drinks came from in case a local business violated dram shop law and should be held liable for the victims' injuries. I'm not saying for certain that a business had any part of what happened here, but a quick glance at the 10000 block of Composite Drive shows a few alcohol-serving establishments just a stone's throw away. At the very least it seems like something to check into in case one of them is endangering its community with illegal over-service.

As I said, it's already a good start that the driver didn't manage to get away. It seems he has some serious consequences coming his way, and rightly so; I just want to make sure that everyone responsible for the damage done is held similarly accountable. The victims deserve no less.
