Commentary on Fiery 3-Vehicle Crash on I-5 in Irvine

There isn't a lot of clear information yet about how exactly this crash happened or what caused it, but considering its tragic aftermath a careful investigation is obviously in order.

To find the clear facts that tell the whole story police should look into many possible factors:

  • Operator errors like distraction, speeding, or failure to yield;
  • Problems or defects in the vehicles involved;
  • Road conditions and design;
  • Visibility, lighting and sightlines;
  • Inclement weather; and
  • Any other traffic in the area.

Checking all those potential issues and others is important, and until more dots are connected it's best not to prematurely guess what picture they'll make.

Of course police also might not complete that picture before wrapping up, depending on whether they have the time and resources to really get to the bottom of things. That's why after major accidents--particularly ones involving commercial trucks--I often suggest a second look by independent experts to better ensure the whole truth is found.

Whatever is learned, those affected deserve to know that no stone was left unturned to find answers. If there's any other action to take, knowing so would depend on what those answers are.
