Duane Limbaugh Injured in Truck Accident on I-10 in Colorado County, TX

Colorado County, TX — August 27, 2022, 47-year-old Duane Limbaugh was injured in a crash with a commercial truck on Interstate 10 in Colorado County.

Authorities say the incident happened around 6:25 a.m. on I-10 near mile marker 696. Preliminary investigation suggests a Freightliner tractor-trailer was traveling east on the highway some distance behind Limbaugh's Toyota sedan when the two vehicles approached stopped traffic, which was backed up for an unrelated accident further east.

Limbaugh stopped at the back of traffic; the truck driver reportedly braked but began to skid and rear-ended the Toyota. After the impact the car ran off the south side of the road and the truck ran into the median.

Limbaugh suffered serious injuries in the collision. The truck driver was unhurt.

When interviewed, the truck driver told police he tried to stop but was unable to because he was very inexperienced with commercial vehicles, having been driving for only 6 months or so.

Commentary on Duane Limbaugh Accident in Colorado County

It's not often that a truck driver outright admits to being inexperienced and making a mistake. Some may think with that recorded in print on a police report there's little else the company behind that driver could do besides admit fault and try to set things right...right?

That may seem reasonable on paper, but I caution against thinking any accident--especially one with a commercial truck--will be as straightforward as reports might imply. Trucking companies rarely accept fault without doing everything they can to avoid it first, and their defense attorneys are frustratingly good at that. It's important to have experienced investigators look carefully at what happened and find clear evidence that helps prevent the company from wiggling free of its obligations.

Some may think I'm being unfair or cynical, but I speak from decades of working on all manner of commercial wrecks. In all that time, I can say with no exaggeration that exactly one company simply admitted fault and tried to make things right without a long and protracted battle. All the others dug in their heels and fought every step of the way against doing the right thing, so unfortunately victims must expect similar treatment and know how to overcome it.
