Commentary on William Gourley Accident in Burleson County
After single-vehicle crashes like this one--particularly those that happen in the wee hours of the morning--folks have a tendency to decide for themselves that the driver did something wrong (a narrative about the driver losing control in a curve does little to change that). Things like speeding, falling asleep, or even possibly being impaired are thrown around in comment sections as people happily jump to conclusions.
In some cases their theories are eventually confirmed, but I've seen many others where police overlooked something critical to understanding what happened. That's why I've advocated for years for independent experts to take a second look and be no critical details were missed. Anything from momentary driver inattention to a medical emergency to a defective part in the vehicle could be responsible for the damage done, and every potential factor deserves attention.
The most important thing is to get clear answers for the victim's loved ones. Anything beyond that would depend on what those answers turn out to be.
