Four Injured in Three-Vehicle Accident on US-190 in Kempner, TX

Kempner, TX — September 22, 2022, injuries were reported in a crash between a school bus, a dump truck and a fuel tanker on U.S. Highway 190 in Kempner.

Authorities say the incident happened around 4:00 p.m. on US-190 near a Valero gas station. Preliminary investigation suggests only that a dump truck and a school bus collided for unknown reasons, after which a passing fuel tanker clipped the dump truck at the first crash site.

The dump truck driver was airlifted from the scene in critical condition. The tanker driver received non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

Two children in the bus were transported by family to area hospitals for evaluation and treatment of suspected minor injuries.

The investigation continues. No further information is currently available.

Commentary on Trucks/Bus Accident on US-190 in Kempner

News reports paint a picture of a serious collision that caused at least one person critical injuries, yet right now there doesn't seem to be much insight about how or why it happened. I'm not coming down on the news for not saying more; they're at the mercy of what police tell them, and right now authorities might still be working out the specifics of the crash. It just means that preliminary reports certainly can't be taken as the whole story.

Speaking of the whole story, I can't help but feel a measure of concern about whether police efforts will be enough to get there by the time they wrap things up. They're there to find out if crimes were committed, not necessarily to put together a careful and comprehensive timeline of events. Add to that the possible competing stories from a city employee and not one but two commercial drivers, and there's a lot of room for crossed wires and confusion.

The best way to cut through all that and get to the bottom of what really happened is to get experts with the right training and tools involved. Forensic scene and vehicle investigation, crash reconstruction, debris and dashcam footage analysis, and many other techniques can help shed far more light on things, yet police rarely go that far to get the whole scoop. Could independent efforts help ensure that the people affected by this wreck get all the facts and the help they deserve?
