Commentary on Auto Accident on FM 969 in Austin

There isn't a lot of clear information yet about how exactly this crash happened or what caused it, but considering several people were injured a careful investigation is obviously in order.

To find the clear facts that tell the whole story police should look into many possible factors including:

  • Operator errors like distraction, speeding, or failure to yield;
  • Problems or defects in any of the vehicles involved;
  • Road conditions and design;
  • Visibility, lighting and sightlines;
  • Inclement weather; and
  • Traffic patterns in the area.

Checking all those potential issues and others is important, and until more dots are connected it's best not to assume what picture they'll make. Of course a "by-the-book" police investigation might not complete that picture before wrapping up, depending on whether they have the time and resources to really get to the bottom of things.

After major accidents--particularly those involving several vehicles, which often compounds their complexity--I often suggest independent investigations by experienced professionals to better ensure the whole truth is found. Whatever is learned, those affected deserve to know that no stone was left unturned to find answers.
