Driver Injured in Semi-Truck Spin-Out Crash on OK-78 in Bryan County

Bryan County, OK — September 19, 2022, a truck driver was injured when his semi-truck spun out across State Highway 78 and overturned in Bryan County.

Authorities say the incident happened Monday along Highway 78 near the Red River. Preliminary investigation suggests a semi-truck was traveling along the highway when the driver allegedly failed to negotiate a left turn. The truck ran off the right side of the road and the driver over-corrected, then the truck spun out through the roadway and came to rest on the other roadside.

The truck driver was transported to an area hospital for unspecified injuries. No other injuries were reported.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information is currently available.

Commentary on Truck Accident on OK-78 in Bryan County

People may read the early details of this accident and think that, while scary, it seems to be mostly a matter of the truck driver failing to take a curve or turn correctly. Further investigation might conclude something to that effect, but jumping to any such conclusion before all the facts are in seems unfair to the injured victim here.

For all anyone knows right now, something else--something harder to detect in a standard investigation--could have played a role in sending that truck spinning through the road. For instance, what if the truck's tires were worn down or defective and lost their traction? Could something else in the truck have been defective or malfunctioned somehow, like its brakes or steering? What were road and weather conditions like in the area? Was there adequate signage when approaching the curve or turn, warning drivers to slow down?

I don't want to make things more complicated than they have to be, but I also don't think it's right to point fingers before all the facts are in. That's why it's best to withhold judgment and let investigators, whether from the police or independent experts, connect more of the dots. The victim deserves the benefit of the doubt until everyone is sure only the facts tell the story.
