Sabine Parish, LA -- September 19, 2022, Edwin Procell was killed following an accident where a semi-trailer hit a tractor.

Preliminary reports indicated that the incident took place at around 1:20 p.m. along US Highway 171 near Noble.

It appears that 68-year-old Edwin G. Procell was in a tractor traveling northbound on the highway. Authorities said that he "moved lanes," following which an 18-wheeler crashed into the back of the tractor.

Procell's injuries ultimately proved fatal. No further information about the crash is available at this time.

Commentary on Edwin Procell Tractor Accident in Sabine Parish

When reading details like these, people will likely just assume this was all due to the tractor cutting off the truck involved. Maybe that happened--people make deadly mistakes all the time, tragic as it is to say. But a key factor in these situations is timing and visibility.

It was clearly daytime when this occurred, and it's not like this highway is some winding mountain path. It's possible that the tractor was visible and far enough away that a reasonably prudent truck driver could have seen and avoided hitting it. If that proves to be true, then it's possible the truck driver involved here was being more negligent than these reports make it seem.

Of course, evidence could simply confirm that the truck driver had no possible way of foreseeing or avoiding this, and they are just an unfortunate actor in events completely beyond their control. I'm not here to say one way or the other what happened. I simply wish to remind people that these situations are rarely ever simple or straight-forward. That's why it's best to let the facts speak for themselves.
