Two Injured when Car Hits Business on Gulfway Drive in Port Arthur, TX

Port Arthur, TX — September 17, 2022, two people were injured when a vehicle crashed into a local business off Gulfway Drive in Port Arthur.

Authorities say the incident happened Saturday night on the 4900 block of Gulfway. There are few preliminary details available, but early reports and photos of the scene suggest a sedan ran off the road and crashed into the front of La Michoacana Tradicional: Paleteria Neveria Ice Cream & More. The impact caved in the storefront and causes significant damage to the vehicle.

Police confirmed that at least two people were injured in the crash, though they did not specify the degree of injury. Charges may be pending for the driver.

The investigation continues. No further information is currently available.

Commentary on Car Accident on Gulfway Drive in Port Arthur

Authorities are still trying to figure out how this terrible incident happened, but while they work to find evidence people may be ready to venture some theories of their own. For example, some may say that when a car hits a stationary object--particularly a large and unmistakable one like a building--on a Saturday night, it's likely intoxication was a factor.

That possibility can't be discounted without proper investigation, and if evidence shows alcohol played a part then a local business may be liable for the victims' injuries under dram shop law.

Having said that, though, nobody has mentioned alcohol at all so far. I read the same reports as everyone else and I'm not making any accusations. I mention dram shop law because it could be a factor depending on what investigators learn, but it also might not apply here. Many other possible factors like road conditions, vehicle failures, and sudden medical episodes affecting the driver must also be considered.

The most important thing is to find clear answers about how and why the wreck occurred. If any other action is warranted beyond that, it will depend on exactly what is learned.
