Child Killed, 6 Injured in Truck Accident on I-68 in Allegany County, MD

Allegany County, MD -- September 16, 2022, a girl was killed and six people were injured after an accident involving a semi-truck.

Authorities said that the crash happened at around 5:50 a.m. along I-68 near MV Smith Road, in the Flintstone area.

Officials said the incident began after an SUV somehow lost control and hit the guardrail. After hitting the other guardrail, a semi-truck then crashed into the SUV.

From the SUV, an 8-year-old girl sustained fatal injuries. Six others from the vehicle were transported to area hospitals. Right now, additional details are unavailable.

Commentary on Fatal Semi-Truck Accident on I-69 in Allegany County, MD

With a crash like this, one important factor to consider is the timing of all these events. If some vehicle loses control and crashes, and that causes the vehicle to careen into the path of an 18-wheeler without any time for the truck driver to react, then it's likely not reasonable that the truck driver would be able to avoid the collision.

With that said, investigations could show that the victims' vehicle was clearly visible following the initial collision as well as far away enough to avoid. In that situation, it may not necessarily matter that there was an initial collision. A truck driver has a general duty to avoidable crashes which are reasonably avoidable. Was this tragedy reasonably avoidable? If nothing else, I'd say a young girl losing her life is worth getting some answers.
