Commentary on Zachary Blevins Car Accident in Travis County

Time and time again, people will question why I would care about a rear-end collision like this. The driver must have done something wrong, right?

First of all, that's a flat out misconception. There are reasons this can happen without a driver doing something wrong. Is it likely? Maybe not, but it's important to know all the facts. Besides, it's not for me to say who is or isn't at fault here. There can still be other extenuating circumstances to consider.

For example, I was discussing a crash not long ago with a colleague where a woman was texting and driving and hit a truck. When investigators looked into things though, it turned out the only reason she had serious injuries was because her airbag was defective.

That's certainly not the type of thing authorities tend to look into, so ensuring there are thorough independent investigations is often crucial in situations like this. I don't see any particular reason why this crash would be an exception.
