Elias Delgado Injured in Single-Vehicle Crash on Codorniz Drive in Laredo, TX

Laredo, TX — August 13, 2022, 31-year-old Elias Delgado was seriously injured in a single-vehicle accident on Codorniz Drive in Laredo.

Authorities say the incident happened around 7:00 a.m. on Codorniz near Rancho Viejo Drive. Preliminary investigation suggests Delgado was driving a Ford Ranger pickup west on the roadway when he lost control at alleged high speeds. The truck veered out of its lane and hit a light pole.

Delgado suffered serious injuries in the wreck. Investigators suspected he was under the influence of alcohol.

Commentary on Elias Delgado Accident in Laredo

If police think alcohol use was a factor in this crash the next logical step would be to seek proof. That usually means either getting blood specimens for testing or obtaining the victim's hospital treatment records. It's unclear if either of those happened here, but neither would surprise me.

If investigators find clear evidence confirming impairment then some might think the only thing left is to charge the victim, but there could be more to look into--including ways to help him get back on his feet. For example, if a local alcohol provider over-served him to the point he couldn't drive a straight line, that business may be responsible for his injuries under Texas dram shop law.

Having said all that, alcohol is just a theory unless clear evidence shows otherwise. If police have already made up their minds and don't plan to look much further (or check for a dram shop violation), maybe independent investigators should step in to be sure the whole story is learned and the victim gets the help he deserves.
