Carlos De Hoyos Injured in Three-Vehicle Crash on Tulipan St in Brownsville, TX

Brownsville, TX — August 7, 2022, 24-year-old Carlos De Hoyos was seriously injured in an auto accident on Tulipan Street in Brownsville.

Authorities say the incident happened around 5:45 a.m. on Tulipan at East Avenue. Preliminary investigation suggests De Hoyos was driving a GMC Sierra pickup east on East Avenue when he approached a red light at Tulipan. He reportedly disregarded the red light and drove into the crossroads where he hit the passenger side of a southbound Dodge Nitro. After the impact he lost control and swerved south, where he hit a stopped Chrysler vehicle on northbound Tulipan.

De Hoyos fled the scene after the crashes but was later apprehended and found to have serious injuries. The other drivers were reportedly unhurt.

Investigators suspected De Hoyos was under the influence of alcohol and collected blood samples for testing.

No further information is currently available.

Commentary on Carlos De Hoyos Accident in Brownsville

If blood tests confirm that the driver was impaired as police suspect, that may mean he'll face some legal consequences for his poor choices that night. That's not really for me to speculate about, but before anyone decides it's the final piece of the puzzle there may be other issues to consider.

For instance, there's the matter of where the suspect's alcohol came from. If a local bar or other alcohol vendor illegally over-served him before the crash, it may be liable for his injuries under dram shop law. It would then have a legal duty to help him get back on his feet.

I can't say exactly what role alcohol played in this wreck, but since police strongly suspect drinking was a factor it seems like a good idea to find out where that happened and how much was consumed. Blood tests should give a rough answer to the second question, but unfortunately police don't often look for answers to the first one. If an accident like this isn't followed up on by experienced independent investigators, there's no telling if the whole truth will be uncovered or if the victim will get the help he deserves.
