Francisco Gallegos Killed in Auto Accident on I-10 in El Paso, TX

El Paso, TX — September 11, 2022, 29-year-old Francisco Gallegos died in a collision with a tractor-trailer on Interstate 10 in El Paso.

Authorities say the incident happened early Sunday morning along I-10 West. Preliminary investigation suggests Gallegos was driving a Chevy Suburban at alleged high speeds, passing other vehicles, when he collided with the rear tires of a Freightliner semi-truck's trailer. After the impact Gallegos lost control, crashed into the concrete median barrier, then rolled over it and came to rest on the shoulder of I-10 East.

Gallegos suffered fatal injuries in the accident. No other injuries were reported.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information is currently available.

Commentary on Francisco Gallegos Accident in El Paso

People may read the preliminary reports about this accident and think that, while tragic, the fault is pretty clear: The victim was speeding and weaving through traffic when the collision occurred.

Further investigation could confirm that's pretty much all there is to this, but before any conclusions are drawn it's best to find out whether there's any more to the story. Was the driver simply reckless, or was he unable to stop his vehicle for some reason? Did the truck he hit change lanes suddenly into or in front of him? Moreover, did the crash actually have to be fatal or did the Suburban's safety features fail somehow?

That's just a few of the many questions that still need answers. Unfortunately I've learned over the years that police sometimes have the same tendency as the general public--find an easy answer, then stick to it no matter what closer scrutiny might turn up. That can cause problems for victims and their families if they seek answers and help down the road, which is why I often recommend getting independent experts to have another look and make sure nothing was missed the first time.
