Commentary on Jacqueline Smith, Dustin Hunter Truck Accident in Brenham

I just want to be clear up front that I don't know anything about this crash beyond what's available to the public. However, I've handled hundreds of commercial vehicle wrecks over the years, and I can shed light on why these situations can be so incredibly challenging to sort out. Grieving families, if nothing else, deserve answers. Without attention from experienced professionals, those answers can easily slip through the cracks.

Let me give an example of what this can mean. A while back, I handled a situation involving a truck driver that lost control and caused a serious crash. As quick as police and others were to simply blame that truck driver, our independent investigations showed that things weren't quite so simple.

The real issue was that the driver wasn't trained properly. He was hired by his employers with little to no experience. Instead of ensuring he could do his job safely, they essentially rushed through all of the training and put him on the road. Any experienced commercial vehicle driver can attest to the skill it takes to do their jobs safely. Not only was that company's impatience a huge risk to the general public, it was a risk to the truck driver himself.

Any reasonable person would be able to see why those actions (or lack thereof) would warrant for more serious consequences than simply some driver on their phone, for example. Otherwise, a company like that wouldn't learn its lesson, and people would likely get hurt in the future. Of the hundreds of people I've helped over the years, they wanted help, and they wanted consequences, but they also saw the importance of taking any possible steps to prevent other families from going through the same hardships.

To that end, instead of everyone jumping to conclusions, it's best to let the evidence speak for itself. But if authorities aren't looking at all possibilities here, then there may still be evidence that needs to be brought to light. Are steps being taken to ensure that happens?
