Commentary on Fatal Truck Accident on I-43 in Belgium

A truck veering across a median like this is obviously concerning, but my main concern right now is who exactly is handling these investigations. Something I learned all too well across hundreds of commercial vehicle wrecks is that authorities alone likely aren't equipped to handle something so chaotic.

That's not to say the officers can't do their jobs. Rather, it takes years of experience and specialized equipment to sift through a crash this devastating. Not only can commercial truck wrecks involve complex factors, but the scene catching fire is only going to present more significant hurdles. I talk all the time about the importance of independent investigators, and a crash like this is going to be far from the exception. After all, just about anything could have happened here.

Did a tire blowout? Did the truck driver have a medical emergency? Were there pre-existing issues that driver's employer knew about but did nothing to address? Was there debris in the road? Did the driver swerve to avoid some other reckless individual? Answering these questions isn't usually within the scope of police investigations alone.

It's why I would never settle for anything less than experienced independent accident reconstructionists who have extensive experience with serious commercial truck wrecks. That could make all the difference in getting the families of these drivers the answers and the help they deserve.
