Commentary on Lee Wegener Motorcycle, Truck Accident in Tappen

I just want to be clear up front that I don't know anything about this crash beyond what's already available to the public. That said, I don't simply take what I see at face value. Something to consider is that a lot of people are quick to blame motorcyclists for a wreck, and that can often lead to the authorities making mistakes.

Take for example a case a family came to me with in which police said their loved one was being reckless and hit a semi-truck. Once we actually dug into the details, though, the evidence simply didn't add up. Debris patterns didn't align, the victim's history was practically spotless, and witnesses we followed up with testified that it was the truck that cut off the motorcyclist. It was only after our efforts that authorities set the record straight.

So when I read about an accident where a motorcyclist supposedly swerved into a tractor-trailer just as the tractor-trailer was apparently attempting to pass the motorcyclist, you'll forgive me for being just a bit skeptical. Maybe investigations will show that the victim made a mistake here. Maybe they would show something in the road just happened to cause the crash at a very bad time. Or maybe investigations will show authorities missed something important, and someone is responsible for this man's injuries. My point isn't to make that determination; my point is simply to remind people to let the evidence speak for itself.
