Juan Leija Killed in Crash with 18-Wheeler at Weidner and Crosswinds in San Antonio, TX

UPDATE (September 12, 2022): The victim of this accident has been identified as 44-year-old Juan Leija. It is our sad duty to report that Mr. Leija later died of his injuries.

San Antonio, TX — September 9, 2022, one person was critically injured when his car crashed into an 18-wheeler at a Northeast San Antonio intersection.

Authorities say the incident happened around 2:30 a.m. at North Weidner Road and Crosswinds Way. Preliminary investigation suggests victim allegedly ran a red light at the crossroads and hit the side of an 18-wheeler passing through on the other road. The victim's car wedged underneath the semi-trailer and was dragged several yards before the big rig came to a stop. Investigators say there were no signs the victim tried to brake before hitting the truck.

Responders used the Jaws of Life to extricate the victim and then transported him to an area hospital in critical condition.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information is currently available.

Commentary on Juan Leija Accident in San Antonio

People may look at the early accounts of this crash and think that's all they need to say how it happened. When a driver allegedly runs a red light at this time of night and hits a truck, I suspect a lot of fingers will get pointed at something like distraction from a phone, or possibly intoxication.

Further investigation might end up agreeing with one or both of those theories, but it's not right to jump to any conclusions before all the facts are in. There could be more to the story. For instance: Was the victim's light solid red or just changing when he passed into the intersection? Was his car in good repair, or is there a chance his brakes failed? Did a defective part in the car keep it from stopping (like what happened with the GM ignition switch fiasco a few years ago)? How fast was the truck traveling on the other road? Setting aside right-of-way for a moment, could or should the truck driver have done anything differently to avoid the crash?

None of those questions and the many others like them that still need answers are meant to overcomplicate things or point fingers. I just firmly believe that when someone is hurt in a crash like this that it's in everyone's best interests to know exactly how and why that happened. A few vague sentences in the news and a once-over from police may not be enough to get all the facts; would an independent investigation stand a better chance of learning the whole truth?
