Commentary on Billy Jackson Accident in Montgomery County

Folks tend to see a single-vehicle crash like this one and start in with some of the "greatest hits" about its possible cause: Were they speeding? Looking at their phone? Asleep? Drunk? To sum up, "How was this the driver's fault?"

Jumping to the conclusion that the driver was to blame is unfair. It makes sense to consider various kinds of operator errors, but they're not the only explanations. A thorough investigation must account for many other possibilities too. For instance, what if the pickup's brakes failed or something else malfunctioned, keeping the driver from stopping? Was the road wet, covered in gravel, or otherwise hazardous? How raised were the train tracks that hitting them sent the truck flying 100 feet? How fast was the truck really traveling? Did its airbags and seat belts deploy when it hit the tree?

That's just a few of the many questions that still need answers. Crashes like this--and the injuries that follow--aren't always a driver's fault, so making snap judgments before all the dots are really connected doesn't give the victim the benefit of the doubt as he deserves. Besides, understanding what else needs attention could be helpful to those who might one day end up in similar circumstances. Click below to read more.
