Car Crashes into Popeye’s on San Bernardo Ave, Four Injured in Laredo, TX

Laredo, TX — September 4, 2022, four people were hospitalized after a car crashed into a Popeye's restaurant on San Bernardo Avenue in Laredo.

Authorities say the incident happened around 6:00 p.m. on the 4900 block of San Bernardo. Preliminary investigation suggests only that a car was traveling in the area when the driver lost control and crashed into the dining area of a nearby Popeye's.

Two people eating in the dining area ages 56 and 48 were seriously injured and were taken to a local hospital. Two others ages 19 and 60 were taken in stable condition to another hospital. No other injuries were reported.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information is currently available.

Commentary on Car Accident on San Bernardo Ave in Laredo

Authorities are still trying to connect the dots here, but some people may already have theories of their own about what happened. For example, they may think that when a vehicle hits a stationary object--particularly a large and unmistakable one like a building--that impairment was a likely factor.

If investigators find conclusive evidence that alcohol played a part that might make things more complex as they'd need to find the drinks' source. If a local business violated dram shop law, it might then be liable for the victims' injuries after the driver plowed into Popeye's.

Reports don't mention alcohol and I want to be very clear that I'm not saying I know something they don't. It's is only one possibility of many, and they all deserve attention. Investigators still need to look into other potential factors like poor road conditions, vehicle failures or defects, and sudden medical emergencies affecting the driver, just to name a few.

The first and foremost thing is to find clear answers about how and why the wreck occurred. Any action beyond that may depend on exactly what is learned.
