Commentary on Nathaniel Williams Hit-and-Run in Houston

It's always infuriating to see yet another hit-and-run on Texas roads, yet it seems they pop up in headlines almost daily. Clearly the driver must be located and held responsible for the tragic damage they did; it's heartening that investigators seem to know the color, make, and model of the car involved, but they'll likely need more than that to track down a suspect and bring them to justice.

Of course investigators shouldn't just satisfy themselves with finding that person; instead they must also try to find out precisely why they fled. They might have just panicked, but police often find that a hit-and-run driver has something to hide they fear will land them in even hotter water.

Warrants, drugs, drunk driving, expired or suspended licenses--these and other crimes can drive a person to leave the scene even if they're obligated to stay. Finding the suspect is the only real way to learn whether any of those apply, though, which is why having the community remain vigilant is an important step toward getting information for the authorities. If police release any new details or developments and members of the community come forward with anything they might know, I'm hopeful that the victim's loved ones can get some kind of resolution after their terrible loss.
