Two Dead, Five Injured when 18-Wheeler Hits SUV on I-55 near Marston, MO

Marston, MO — September 2, 2022, two children died and five people were injured when an SUV and an 18-wheeler crashed on Interstate 55 near Marston.

Authorities say the incident happened around 12:10 p.m. on I-55 a few miles south of Marston. Preliminary investigation suggests 34-year-old Startisha Brown was driving a Ford Expedition on a sideroad when she turned onto I-55. While turning, Brown allegedly failed to yield to an approaching 18-wheeler; the northbound truck crashed into the SUV in the highway's travel lanes.

Two children ages 11 and 14 died in the crash. Two other children and 30-year-old passenger Tatrelisha Johnson suffered serious injuries, while Brown and a 14-year-old girl sustained moderate injuries. The truck driver was reportedly unhurt.

The investigation continues. No further information is currently available.

Commentary on Startisha Brown Accident on I-55 near Marston

It's not clear why the victim might have failed to yield to the truck as reports suggest, but before anyone jumps to conclusions or points fingers it's important to consider all the potential explanations.

For example: Could the Ford have had some kind of mechanical or brake problem? What about any health problems that might have incapacitated the driver? Could something have blocked her view of the big rig? Was signage covered or missing at the intersection? Were there any other vehicles around at the time? Could bad weather or hazardous road conditions have been a factor? Does that area have a history of similar crashes? Is the intersection designed poorly? Ignoring right-of-way for a moment, could the truck driver have done anything differently to avoid the collision or reduce its damage?

I'm not trying to overcomplicate things or unfairly blame anyone. I just want to make sure all the details are learned as they should be after any accident. Many crashes aren't as simple as they might appear and crucial details are often overlooked or misunderstood. Considering the tragic damage done here it doesn't seem unfair to want a careful investigation and the whole truth supported by facts. Will police be thorough enough to get that, or should an independent investigation be started?
