Trucker Injured in Fiery Crash with House on Birney Ave in Scranton, PA

Scranton, PA — September 2, 2022, a truck driver was injured when a big rig crashed into a house and caught fire on Birney Avenue in Scranton.

Authorities say the incident happened around 2:00 a.m. along Birney Avenue near Corey Street. Preliminary investigation suggests only that an 18-wheeler was traveling along the roadway near a construction zone when the driver lost control for unknown reasons. The truck veered off the road and crashed into two cars, a utility pole, and finally a house, then caught fire.

The truck driver was transported to an area hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries. Two people in the house when the truck hit it escaped safely.

The investigation continues. No further information is currently available.

Commentary on Truck Accident on Birney Ave in Scranton

Obviously there's still a lot of investigation to do here before anyone can say what happened. I know from long experience that people tend to see a single-vehicle accident--particularly one where someone hits a stationary object like a building--and say the driver made a big mistake. That could be taking their eyes off the road to look at a phone, falling asleep at the wheel (an increased risk in the wee hours of the morning), or even driving under the influence.

To be clear, I'm not accusing the truck driver of any of those. As a matter of fact, I often write about the urgent need for careful and thorough investigations to be sure fingers are not unfairly pointed. For all anyone knows right now the truck could have lost traction on loose debris from the nearby construction; locals also told the news that many drivers speed through the area (sometimes after leaving local bars) so it's possible the driver had to swerve sharply to avoid someone else.

All the possibilities deserve careful investigation to be sure the truth is learned. Until that happens it's best to reserve judgment and instead focus on how best to help the people affected by the wreck.
