Commentary on Torrey Flim Accident in Hamilton Twp

Folks tend to think that the rear driver is to blame for a rear-end crash by default, but I hope instead they'll take a moment to recognize how few details there really are in news reports. At this point it would be entirely unfair to point fingers as investigators work to connect more dots. The specifics of a crash can make all the difference, which is why it's always important to investigate carefully and learn all the facts.

Details like the speeds of all the vehicles involved, their condition, what all the drivers were doing at the time, visibility, light, road, and weather conditions, whether the dump truck braked or switched lanes suddenly ahead of the victim, why the third vehicle couldn't or didn't stop before hitting the first scene, and many others may change how the crash is understood. Until those and other blanks are filled in it's best not to jump to any conclusions.

Reports don't have many specifics and I'm not saying I know more than they do--quite the opposite, since I want more information and for all possibilities to get attention. People read about someone rear-ending a truck and think "case closed," but without a full and thorough investigation no one can be sure exactly why that happened. At the very least the victim deserves the benefit of the doubt and her family should know that every effort was made to find the whole truth. Anything beyond that would depend on what is learned.
