Commentary on Dump Truck Accident on Trent Avenue in Spokane Valley

When it comes to something this devastating, it only makes me more adamant about not jumping to conclusions. Folks see teenagers driving and they're ready to believe anything that points to them being reckless. As often as that is the cause of a serious crash, it's important to consider other possibilities, even if they may seem unlikely. That's where police sometimes come up short.

Not long ago, for example, I handled a situation where a woman turned in front of an oncoming 18-wheeler, leading to a fatal collision. When we dug into things, though, we found out that it was foggy at the time, the 18-wheeler was going too fast for the foggy conditions, and the truck's headlights were too dim because of how dirty they were. That made the situation far more complex, yet somehow authorities completely missed those details.

I'm not trying to say that happened here, but there are families out there going through what can only be described as devastating hardship. They at least deserve to know they're getting the full story, especially if those details can get them some much needed help. Simply relying on police accounts alone just may not be enough.
