Jeff Barker Killed in Truck Accident in Sterling, IL

Sterling, IL -- August 29, 2022, Jeff Barker was killed due to an accident where a tractor-trailer crashed off the side of the road.

Investigators reported that the crash took place late Monday along Ronald Reagan Memorial Tollway/I-88 near mile marker 41.

According to officials, 63-year-old Jeff Barker was in a tractor-trailer traveling along the interstate. Somehow, the tractor-trailer ran off the side of the road where it crashed into a tree.

Due to the collision, Barker sustained fatal injuries. It appears no one else was hurt. No further information is available.

It's not clear what exactly happened here, though folks can be quick to assume the driver did something wrong. As common as things like fatigue, distraction, and speeding are, investigators need to have the experience to consider other possibilities. That's where I become concerned.

Quite frankly, I've found across hundreds of commercial vehicle wrecks that authorities don't often have the tools or experience to look into less common factors. One thing I always make sure gets attention, for example, is mechanical issues. Commercial trucks are incredibly complex, and all kinds of things can go wrong. Is that something being looked into here? If not, then this man's loved ones may not be getting the answers they deserve.
