Folks tend to jump to conclusions when they see rear-end collisions like this. That's because they're typically the cause of something like speeding or distracted driving. But failing to consider other possibilities is how important details can slip through the cracks.

That's how one gets a situation like one a colleague of mine brought up a while back. A woman said to be texting and driving hit a truck, suffering serious injuries. But when investigators looked into things, it appeared her injuries were more severe than they ought to have been based on the speed of the collision. So what went wrong? Well, it turned out she had a faulty air bag.

Is that a common factor? Not at all, but it does happen. Without proper investigations, details like that can easily slip through the cracks. That's why it's important to consider whether or not simply relying on police is really the best approach to getting a grieving family the answers they deserve.
