Vida, OR -- August 26, 2022, Shannon Randall was killed due to an accident where a car crashed with a construction vehicle.

Authorities reported that the crash took place early Friday outside of Vida along Highway 126. It appears that 40-year-old Shannon Randall was in a vehicle traveling eastbound on the highway.

Ahead, a truck with a trailer was backing onto the roadway from a construction zone. There was reportedly a flagger assisting the truck. Somehow, Randall's vehicle crashed into the trailer. As a result, Randall sustained fatal injuries. A teenager in the vehicle had injuries.

Right now, no further information is available.

Commentary on Shannon Randall Truck Accident in Vida

Generally speaking, one of the first things I ask with trucks backing onto a roadway is whether or not they had a crew out there flagging down traffic. That's what responsible companies do, and reports seem to say that there was at least one flagger here. With that said, that's not some kind of free pass. There can still be extenuating circumstances to consider.

I handled a crash a while back, for example, where a truck driver had flags on an oversized load, but further investigations showed the flags were so worn and faded that they practically blended in with the surroundings.

Checking a box or two isn't enough. It's entirely possible that something like distracted driving led to the crash, or it's possible something about this construction zone unnecessarily but the victim in danger. Making sure the victim's loved ones at least know they're getting the full story should be a priority.
