Felipe Ruiz Injured in Truck Accident on Southwest Freeway in Houston, TX

Houston, TX — June 23, 2022, 59-year-old Felipe Ruiz was injured in a crash with a tractor-trailer on the Southwest Freeway in Houston.

Reports say the incident happened around 5:05 a.m. on the freeway near Bissonnet Street. Preliminary investigation suggests a Kenworth semi-truck was towing a trailer south on the freeway when the trailer, possibly raised somehow, hit an overhead sign and the driver lost control. The cab veered sharply left and Ruiz's southbound Toyota Corolla crashed into its driver's side. The semi-trailer detached from the cab and overturned, then slid a short distance south before it came to rest blocking several lanes.

Ruiz suffered serious injuries in the collision. The truck driver received possible injuries.

Commentary on Felipe Ruiz Accident on SW Freeway in Houston

Reports strongly suggest something was wrong with the truck's trailer that caused it to hit the overhead sign, in turn triggering the following crash. If the facts laid out by police are accurate, some may think the trucker and his employer would have little choice but to accept responsibility for the accident and help the victim with his recovery.

That may seem reasonable on its face, but expecting accountability and actually getting it are different things. Frustrating as it often is, trucking companies rarely accept fault for these matters without doing everything they can to avoid it first. Some may not see how that'd be possible given how this wreck allegedly occurred, but I've warned a lot of people over the years not to underestimate how inventive defense attorneys can be when their clients' assets and reputations are on the line.
