Commentary on Brandon Lemon Accident in Harris County

Reports paint a pretty-simple picture of a man walking in the road when a car came up and hit him. That simplistic story doesn't do particularly good job of explaining why that happened, though. If the victim was just walking along in the roadway, couldn't the driver have avoided him? If not, why not? If so, why didn't he? Were both parties awake, alert, and paying attention to their surroundings? Was the victim hard to see? What are lighting and sightlines like along that stretch of road? Police thought the driver might have been under the influence of alcohol; have blood tests shown whether that suspicion was accurate?

I don't want to make this more complicated or accuse anyone of anything, but I can't be alone in wanting to know the specific cause of this terrible incident. A man lost his life here, and finding out exactly why that happened is the least investigators can do in order to help his family come to grips with their loss. If there are further steps to take beyond bringing them the truth, knowing that will depend on what the truth turns out to be.
