Commentary on Javier Villarreal Hit-and-Run in Dallas
I can't and won't speak to reports' suggestion that the victim may have stepped into the road as the vehicle approached, but whether or not that's accurate and no matter what the victim's motivation might have been there is no excuse for the driver striking him and then leaving him behind without trying to help. For all anyone knows the time lost between the vehicle leaving and someone calling for help could have been crucial in saving this man's life.
So why did the driver flee? Did they just panic, or was this a calculated effort to avoid responsibility? Did they have something else to hide from police? Drugs, warrants, drunk driving--these are all common reasons people flee crash scenes, and they could have additional implications if they were part of why the driver took off.
Hopefully continued efforts from police and cooperation from the community lead to identifying a suspect so someone can answer for their role in this tragic event. If everyone remains diligent and does their part, I have hope that the victim's loved ones will see justice done.
