Commentary on Fiery Truck Accident on I-81N in Harrisburg
Reports only say the big rig ran off the road, but it seems investigators don't have much insight yet into why that happened. Did the driver make a mistake--get distracted at the wheel, say, or accidentally nod off? Did the truck hit a bad patch of road and lose traction? Did a tire blow out? Or did a malfunction or defect in the truck send it off-course?
That's only a handful of possible factors that need careful attention--particularly the idea of a malfunction or defect. Those happen in vehicles far more often than people realize, and 18-wheelers in particular have a number of concerning design flaws that can make a crash jump from bad to worse in no time.
Take for example their "saddle" fuel tanks: Because of their exposed placement at the sides of the truck, there's little between them and the elements and they sometimes rupture far too easily during a wreck. A truck crash is bad enough without becoming a fiery one, yet the majority of big rigs have these time bombs strapped to their sides and that's a big problem. Click the link below to read more.
