One Killed, Four Injured in 3-Vehicle Crash in Apple Valley, CA

Apple Valley, CA — August 17, 2022, one person died and four were injured in a three-vehicle crash near an Apple Valley intersection.

Reports say the incident happened around 12:45 p.m. near the crossing of Bear Valley Road and Tujunga Drive. Preliminary investigation suggests a Subaru Forester, a Mazda 3 sedan and a semi-truck with double tanker trailers collided along the roadway under unknown circumstances.

Images of the crash's aftermath show the commercial truck overturned on the shoulder. The Subaru was upright nearby with its front end destroyed, and the Mazda had front-end and tire damage.

A passenger in the Subaru was pronounced dead at the scene. Its driver and the truck driver were airlifted to area hospitals for treatment of serious injuries. Two other people involved in the wreck were taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information is currently available.

Commentary on Three-Vehicle Crash in Apple Valley

Early reports about this accident only describe the scene afterward but say little about how or why things went the way they did. As investigators work to fill in more blanks, I hope nobody takes it upon themselves to guess at the wreck's cause or circumstances.

While figuring out what happened and why, police must still look at many potential factors: Common driver mistakes like distraction or speeding, problems or defects in the vehicles, road conditions and design, visibility and sightlines, missing or unclear signage, bad weather, traffic patterns in the area, and many other things that could have influenced or even caused the crash.

It's always important to consider all the variables before drawing any conclusions, particularly when it seems like few real answers have been found so far. I've seen too many folks read some vague news report and make up their minds right away, only for the discovered facts to change their minds down the road. Of course a standard police investigation might not find those facts before coming to a close...

After a major accident (particularly one involving a commercial truck) an independent investigation usually stands a better chance of learning the real story--including the subtle but critical details that police sometimes overlook. Whatever the truth turns out to be, everyone involved and affected deserves all the answers they can get. Those answers would also help determine what other steps, if any, should be taken.
