Commentary on Marci Michelle Accident on I-40 in Amarillo

All reports say so far is that an SUV sideswiped a truck and then went out of control. I have no reason to doubt that, but it's also not enough to say with confidence how or why the accident occurred. Anyone tempted to just point fingers at the driver for making a mistake would do well to remember that everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt unless clear evidence says otherwise.

That's why it's important to look into all the possible explanations for the accident. Poor road conditions or lighting, sudden medical emergencies, the truck suddenly trying to merge as the SUV passed it, or even some kind of mechanical defect or malfunction in the Dodge could have been behind the wreck, and if fingers are prematurely pointed those issues might be overlooked.

It's always best to investigate carefully and thoroughly and consider all the potential variables. Unfortunately law enforcement doesn't always have the time or resources to do so, which can be highly problematic for victims and families afterward.
